Internal Laws of Probability, Generalized Likelihoods and Lewis’ Infinitesimal Chances–A Response to Adam Elga

چکیده
The rejection of an infinitesimal solution to the zero-fit problem by A. Elga ([2004]) does not seem to appreciate the opportunities provided by the use of internal finitelyadditive probability measures. Indeed, internal laws of probability can be used to find a satisfactory infinitesimal answer to many zero-fit problems, not only to the one suggested by Elga, but also to the Markov chain (that is, discrete and memory-less) models of reality. Moreover, the generalization of likelihoods that Elga has in mind is not as hopeless as it appears to be in his article. In fact, for many practically important examples, through the use of likelihoods one can succeed in circumventing the zero-fit problem. 1 The Zero-fit Problem on Infinite State Spaces 2 Elga’s Critique of the Infinitesimal Approach to the Zero-fit Problem 3 Two Examples for Infinitesimal Solutions to the Zero-fit Problem 4 Mathematical Modelling in Nonstandard Universes? 5 Are Nonstandard Models Unnatural? 6 Likelihoods and Densities A Internal Probability Measures and the Loeb Measure Construction B The (Countable) Coin Tossing Sequence Revisited C Solution to the Zero-fit Problem for a Finite-state Model without Memory D An Additional Note on ‘Integrating over Densities’ E Well-defined Continuous Versions of Density Functions 1 The Zero-fit Problem on Infinite State Spaces In general, the zero-fit problem arises when two candidates for a probabilistic law of nature assign probability (‘fit’) zero to an observation and it is therefore not possible to prefer one over the other. On Infinitesimal Conformal Transformations of the Tangent Bundles with the Generalized Metric
Let be an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold, and be its tangent bundle with the lift metric. Then every infinitesimal fiber-preserving conformal transformation induces an infinitesimal homothetic transformation on . Furthermore, the correspondence gives a homomorphism of the Lie algebra of infinitesimal fiber-preserving conformal transformations on onto the Lie algebra of infinitesimal ...
متن کاملSubjective Probabilities Need Not Be Sharp
It is well known that classical, aka ‘sharp’, Bayesian decision theory, which models belief states as single probability functions, faces a number of serious difficulties with respect to its handling of agnosticism. These difficulties have led to the increasing popularity of so-called ‘imprecise’ models of decision-making, which represent belief states as sets of probability functions. In a rec...
متن کاملDeterministic Laws and Epistemic Chances
In this paper, a concept of chance is introduced that is compatible with deterministic physical laws, yet does justice to our use of chance-talk in connection with typical games of chance, and in classical statistical mechanics. We take our cue from what Poincaré called “the method of arbitrary functions,” and elaborate upon a suggestion made by Savage in connection with this. Comparison is mad...
متن کاملProbabilities as Ratios of Ranges in Initial-State Spaces
Objective interpretations of probability imply that probability statements are made true or false by reality, by facts independent of our state of mind or information. What are those facts, what are the “chancemakers” – if we take “chance” to be synonymous with “objective probability”? I will start by briefly discussing the two most popular types of answer to this question, namely, frequency an...
متن کاملDeterministic Chance
I argue that there are non-trivial objective chances (that is, objective chances other than 0 and 1) even in deterministic worlds. The argument is straightforward. I observe that there are probabilistic special scientific laws even in deterministic worlds. These laws project nontrivial probabilities for the events that they concern. And these probabilities play the chance role and so should be ...
